David Boreanaz on going from bones to leading CBS’s SEAL team

aspiring Boreanaz moves on from playing FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth, a former Army Ranger, on FOX’s Bones to taking on the role of Navy SEAL Jason Hayes on CBS’s SEAL Team, which premieres tonight.

“There’s a pretty big difference,” the actor said of the two characters despite the fact that they both serve in the military. “Personally in his life, Jason is struggling with a lot of flaws; Seeley Booth is a bit more of a straight shooter, a sniper than he says.”
On tonight’s episode of “Tip of the Spear,” we meet Hayes and his elite team of Navy SEALs as they train, plan and execute the most dangerous, high-stakes missions ever. Our country can demand and direct their personal lives.

At a SEAL Team press day, Boreanaz spoke to reporters about what interested him about the character and the series that got him signed on, how he viewed his character, how actions he is allowed to perform, etc. get straight to it after Bones wraps it up. No time off?

I just like to work. I love working, and when I sit down and talk to the people involved, the people on the outside, and the people who are part of this story, the beginning of it, the really moving part for I’m getting a phone. call from [executive producer Christopher Chulack]

David Boreanaz on Going from Bones to Leader of CBS' SEAL Team - Parade.

He called me and gauged the level of interest using his own experiences and what he was going through in life. That seemed right to me, and I respected that, and I remember talking to Chris, and he said, “I’m excited to be on a show that’s about the lives of people who come out out and doing these heroic things, and they come home and are a little lost sometimes, and we don’t see that. But we see the flag being raised and we see the achievements, the safe for us,” and that was very powerful. for me, and I just joined, and I’m happy to be here. In the pilot episode, your character is in psychotherapy and is very combative about it. You don’t want to be there. Tell us more about this guy as you see him, what he’s been through, and what he’s currently going through as a character.

Well, it’s still developing. I think those are just little tidbits. I can say he is someone who has performed many missions and as a team leader, has responsibility and loyalty to his team. But also, things fell apart in his personal life. That in itself would be an interesting ride.
The characters live in a very sensitive, fast-paced job and they control the chaos. They are calm in the chaos where we would all panic and run away. They calculate very carefully and very slowly. And when they get home, they are very nervous in situations like grilling meat or buying a box of cereal at the supermarket. They cannot understand some things.

What’s interesting to me is being able to talk and listen to the SEALs that we have on our floor, which are the technology advisors, Tyler Gray, Justin, Mark Semos, who have been through the experiences hey and get some insight as to how I would portray that.

How does it feel stepping into a new character after so many seasons on Bones?

It’s great. Awesome. Loved it. For me it was a complete 360 degree rotation.

As you dig deeper into this role, what interests you and what do you hope you can explore further?

When you bring content to a new character, you have to talk to everyone. You have to talk to the SEAL. You have to adapt to what you want to bring to it. What I bring will never be told to you because it is the magic that I bring. That’s my strength. I see it as a blessing. I’m so lucky to be able to do that and get to play a character who does what he does for a living, and it’s so contradictory. It’s a great opportunity to explore something and create something unique.
If the program is successful the way you hope it will be, would you like to talk to military families and get a deeper look at what they’ve been through?

Obviously I talked to a number of people. Being around them, the SEALs and the stories they told me was both uncomfortable and exhilarating. It was a whole new world for me. To have it all, it’s difficult. You have to go little by little. Of course, I’m ready to talk to the military, to the families, yes, without even questioning it. What was the most interesting thing about learning about what they do and their thought process?

They are wired differently. When they have a mission and have to go in, they don’t want to fail. They are perfectionists, so I think what bothers them the most is when something goes wrong. One time I
