Coronation Street enthusiasts have expressed their discontent with the recent blackmail plot twist on the famous cobbles, deeming it ‘not okay’. Weatherfield has been a hotbed of drama this week, with a hit-and-run incident putting David Platt and Daisy Midgeley’s lives at risk.
As regular viewers of the ITV soap will know, the car accident was a desperate move by David, portrayed by Jack P Shepherd, to repay the money he owes to underworld figure Harvey Gaskell.
The substantial amount of money was initially offered to David’s sister Sarah Platt by her ex-lover, Damon Hay, who is also Harvey’s brother. This offer came after Damon learned about the botched surgery undergone by Sarah’s daughter Bethany in Turkey.
However, David intercepted the money, intending to use it to purchase his mother Gail’s house as she planned to leave Weatherfield following her marriage to Jesse Chadwick. Gail did indeed depart in December after spending 50 years on the Cobbles.
In Monday night’s episode (March 3), viewers watched as David was confronted by former prison acquaintance Andy Garland, whom he had been performing illegal tasks for. Andy brandished a knife and claimed that Harvey wanted David dead for his life insurance payout, reports the Manchester Evening News.
David, fresh from a court appearance where his stepson Max Turner received a six-and-a-half-year prison sentence for arson, managed to fend off Andy without any harm done. However, later in the episode, David was summoned back to the salon with a shocking proposition – to take his own life as the only means to protect his family.
In Wednesday night’s episode of Coronation Street (March 5), viewers saw David’s plan unfold. He spent time penning letters to his family and conversing with his grandmother, Audrey Roberts.
His internal thoughts were audible as he counted down to 2pm, the moment he had arranged for Andy to run him over in the street.
As the climactic moments approached, David positioned himself in the middle of the road. A car sped towards him, and Shona looked on in terror as David was hit, with Daisy Midgeley also caught up in the incident.
Both were swiftly taken to hospital, with David’s life precariously hanging in the balance. Medical staff had to resuscitate him before performing emergency surgery and inducing a coma.
In Friday’s episode (March 7), there was a sigh of relief from the Platt family as David woke up from his coma. However, Shona was soon plunged into despair when she found out that David had orchestrated the attempt on his own life.
David explained that his intention was for the Platts to use his life insurance to repay Harvey after his death, thereby ensuring everyone’s safety.
David confessed his struggle to shake off Harvey’s influence, and Shona, stricken by grief, took matters into her own hands. She burst into Daisy’s hospital room following Daisy’s tragic miscarriage caused by the collision, confronting her to cough up £40,000 to repay Harvey – threatening to expose her role in her accident with Debbie Webster’s stolen vehicle, which was initially swiped by Daniel Osbourne.
Upon learning of Daisy’s recent loss, Shona swiftly offered her apologies and retreated from the room, overwhelmed with remorse. But afterwards, Daisy pledged to transfer the cash to Shona to avoid jail time for herself and Daniel.
The incident, however, left Coronation Street fans both appalled and befuddled. @TVMusings22 tweeted: “Wow Shona blackmailing Daisy after what she’s just had to go through! Nah I’m not okay with this #corrie.”
Meanwhile, @Phoenix_Gsds expressed their dismay: “Right! It’s not like it was the Platts money and Daisy may have knocked Shona down but it’s David’s fault that Daisy’s now in hospital!”
@missmollybruton summed up the perplexity among viewers: “So all this money shifting means that now Daisy/Jenny are in debt to Daniel. He owns the pub. Shona has £40k to pay Harvey and Carla has her money back as well? (I think? ? ? ? ? ) #corrie.”
And seeking clarity, @grimgda62 queried: “Has Daisy paid off Carla or has she just given £40k to Shona at this point? I got lost as well..”
Twitter user @Sophiegracei expressed her confusion, tweeting: “I’m so confused- if Daisy owed Carla all this money how is she now affording to pay Shona £40K? Or is it because Daniel sent her the money to pay Carla and she’s using that and then giving him the rest back? ? But then Carla isn’t getting her money? ? ! ! #corrie someone help.”
Another user, @topcac, chimed in with: “So let me get this straight. Daisy giving Shona £40k and the rest goes back to Daniel and then it’s over. Finished. And Carla still DOESN’T HAVE HER MONEY! ! ! ! #Corrie.”
