We knew it was coming, but that doesn’t make it any less jolting. In Tuesday night’s FBI Season 6 premiere, “All the Rage,” our favorite feds had to grapple with an agency loss that is expected to have ripple effects throughout the rest of the season.

In the episode, the team was summoned to the grisly scene of a city bus bombing, which claimed the lives of 10 innocent people including a child. A fatal encounter with the bomber led the NY feds to zero in on his terrorist sect—Al-Shabaab, which pledged allegiance to Al-Qaeda in 2012 and originated in Somalia. In a sting operation at a local restaurant, Special Agent Tiffany Wallace (Katherine Renee Kane) brought Trevor Hobbs (Roshawn Franklin) along to suss out the leader of the violent group, and, once he was made by the suspect, he succumbed to a close fire gunshot right there on the floor.

This devastating death had been previewed by the show’s talent ahead of the premiere. After Missy Peregrym teased that fans should brace for “a family member” to be killed off in the season opener, showrunner Rick Eid revealed the lasting impact this catastrophe will have on the team.

“The consequences of this tragedy will linger throughout the season,” Eid told Parade. “One of our characters feels responsible for this person’s death. These feelings of anger and guilt will definitely reverberate throughout the season.”

Now that the episode has aired, and we know who it was that fell in the first episode of Season 6, we can surmise that it’s Tiffany Wallace who’ll probably be reeling the most from this tragedy. The first example of this, of course, immediately followed Hobbs’ death as she had to be checked by a colleague for her aggression in the middle of an operation.

Hobbs was a special agent and intelligence analyst who first joined on the action in Season 2’s “The Lives of Others.” He was a reliable team player for the Joint Operations Center and participated in whatever ways he was needed—up to and including his final mission.

Next week’s episode, titled “Remorse,” won’t slow down on the internal devastation for the team. The episode will see the president of the NY Fed murdered in the course of helping a woman in danger as the team races to find the killer and the missing woman. Meanwhile, Jubal Valentine (Jeremy Sisto) will be going through some things as a dark connection to one of his past cases comes to light in an investigation at the same time as his son is suspended from school for misbehavior. When it rains it pours… even for the feds.
