Meet ‘Task Team 6’, the Bad Guy Who Killed Osama Bin Laden
The team that killed Osama Bin Laden was an elite group of special forces informally known as SEAL Team 6.
Officially, the team’s name is kept secret and not publicly announced, technically there is no Team 6. A Tier One counter-terrorism force similar to the Army’s elusive Delta group, Team 6’s mission rarely made it to the news, much less.
It shows how important publicizing the killing of Bin Laden was to America that this morning, Team 6 was front-page news.
The members of Team 6 are all “black” agents. They exist outside military protocol, engage in operations at the highest levels of classification, and often lie outside the boundaries of international law. To maintain plausible deniability in case they are caught, records of black ops are rarely kept.
The development of SEAL Team 6 was in direct response to the rescue effort of American hostages held in Iran in 1980. The mission was a colossal failure, failed at many points, and demonstrated the need to has a dedicated counter-terrorism team capable of operating with the utmost secrecy.
The team was labeled 6 at the time to confuse Soviet intelligence about the number of SEAL teams active at the time. There were only two other people.
Team 6 recruited top agents from other SEAL units and trained them even stronger from there. Even among proven SEALs, Team 6’s attrition rate is reported to be nearly half.
There are no names for the current members of Team 6, but the CIA recruits heavily from their numbers for their Special Operations Group, so the fact that they were chosen to work with the CIA on this mission is reasonable thing.
Team 6 is often assigned to maritime agencies: rescuing ships, oil rigs, naval bases, or land bases accessible by water. There are no waterways near Bin Laden’s compound.
When a former Navy SEAL was asked to comment on this article, all he could say was, “You know I’d love to help you, but I can’t say a word about Team 6. Nope.” There’s Team 6.”
