SEAL Team: David Boreanaz Teases Finale’s ‘Unexpected Twist’, Jason’s Big Flashback Hopefully Coming
SEAL Team' Season 3 Finale Preview: David Boreanaz

In the season’s provisional ending (two episodes left unfinished), Jason is thinking about their new HVT as the son of a terrorist leader his team destroyed years ago when he went with Mandy on a trip into town, where she will at least try to compensate the widow of a murdered local property. Meanwhile, the rest of Bravo Team are pulled into a time-sensitive mission—sans Jason—that could put them ahead of their target, Azfaar Al-Hazred.

Even though the season ended early, did the finale still deliver a confusing plot? TVLine spoke with series showrunner David Boreanaz about what’s coming up and what lies ahead, in the event of a Season 4 Renewal.
A lot has happened this season, with a lot on the line for each guy. They all have decisions to make about their future. Why do you think Season 3 is the right time to explore this?
Well, it takes a while to delve into each character’s development. You must earn that right to do so. When you start out you’re lucky to get a pilot and get picked up, you’re working with the best characters possible and it takes time to get there. Our job as actors portraying those characters is to provide the right amount of raw material along the way to make the audience want to be invested, and I think that’s what we earned. Okay. Especially going into Season 3. With Jason, there was a very deep analysis in Season 2 with him, and Season 3 was just an emotional roller coaster ride, so I think we got there. get that.

TELEVISION | It seems almost impossible — like, there would be a perfect storm — for Team Bravo to be 100% intact at the end of this shortened season.
We were cut short by completing two episodes — everyone has that problem, on other shows — so our season finale wasn’t the ending we hoped for. But [this episode] definitely has a twist for a character, at least for Jason. I will say that. But we reach some resolution with some of the characters, which also opens up more doors. When you deal with a particular thing that the character is going through, you open that door and go through another door, and there are more doors to open. When you solve something, there’s always something on the other end saying, “Oh, what about this?”

TELEVISION | But by the end of the planned finale, if you finish Episode 22, will you get more endings?
[Coming out of] 22 there will be some uncertainty. But [Episode] 21, there’s a big change from 21 to 22. It’s going to be a big moment…how should I say…that leaves you hanging.
Lindell continually makes a point about how Jason has aged because of this. As far as you know, what is the average age of a Level One Operator? Like, is anyone like Jason teething?
I know that there are a lot of operators out there [in that age range] who are still crushing it and rolling, so it’s not something that you don’t see. I know that the guy who participated in the Bin Laden raid – I won’t say what he did – is still out there in the lead. So, yes, I would say there is a small percentage that reach that age, but they do exist.

TELEVISION | What is Jason up to in the season finale airing Wednesday?
Well, he’s in touch with his past self, as well as the person he hunted down and took down [years ago]. We saw that in this last episode. When he reopened that door, he was thinking about the man who had gone after [Asim Al-Hazred] – the son of the man Jason had actually taken down.

SEAL TeamTVLINE  TV Ratings | Jason seemed to have shed his father’s son connection as Thirty, a bastard—
[Laughs] He’s great.

TELEVISION | Oh my God, he’s the worst. But Thirty is touting this next goal as one for the ages, and Jason says, “It’s just another name on the list.”
I think that’s where Jason is headed – he’s kind of “let it go and let it go” this season, really to the point of pushing his team and then finding himself affected by it. I can say it’s just his mentality. He is organized and forward-focused. It also touches on where he was at the end of Season 3 and where he’ll move on to [Episodes] 21 and 22 – which aren’t finished yet. It’s strange to talk about, but he will have to face it, especially at 21 and 22 years old.
