Why did Jim Street leave S.W.A.T.? Alex Russell, who has played Jim Street since Season 1, was written out as a series regular before Season 7 and only appeared in one episode of the currently airing final season.

He announced the news on February 11, 2024. “Dear SWAT fans… As many of you know by now, I will not be returning as a series regular in season 7, ” Russell wrote on Instagram. “I am so grateful for the opportunity to make Jim Street a reality and to have shared this amazing experience with my SWAT family – it has been a blast.” Russell added: “All of us at SWAT are eternally grateful to each and every fan for making our amazing work possible. I know in this final season we will give you the epic ending you deserve and don’t worry, you haven’t seen the last of Jim Street yet! .”

Street is the newest recruit to S.W.A.T. team, after transferring from the Long Beach Police Department in Season 1. He’s also a fan favorite, who commented on Russell’s post and shared how sad they felt about the news. “So disappointing! I want to see all the characters in all the episodes,” one fan wrote. Another chimed in: “So I’m done watching SWAT!  I go where you go!”

Ahead of the Season 7 premiere, showrunner Andrew Dettmann explained that the casting changes were made to give each character, including Street, a “proper curtain call.” “The episodes we have for them really focus on the characters and the developments in their storylines,” he told TVLine.

“The idea for the final 13 was, if this is the end for us, then no one should feel underrated,” Dettman continued, adding that he was “really excited” for the episode Street is introduced. Street did not appear in the first two episodes of Season 7, but fans quickly learned that he would not be working with Long Beach S.W.A.T. group and shape them into shape, all the while giving themselves the nickname “Hollywood.” In the fifth episode, titled “End of the Road,” the Los Angeles and Long Beach teams teamed up to defeat a biker club. In the process, Street’s former boss in Long Beach, Sergeant Barry Jones (Brian Letscher), is shot and killed.

The former rookie stepped up and led the Long Beach team, successfully taking down the leader of the cycling club. Before leaving for Long Beach again, Street said a final goodbye to Hondo. “You taught me to be a S.W.A.T. officer, and then you taught me to be a leader. Right now, they need a leader,” he said. “I owe you, team
