SEAL Team season 6

Why did Max Thieriot leave SEAL Team? As you prepare to watch this weekend’s episode on Paramount+, you should wonder a little about that. Even though Clay Spenser hasn’t been on Bravo Team for a while, he’s still an active part of the show – that is, at least until we get to season 6 episode 8.

As many of you know, Thieriot is leaving the show due to his commitments to CBS’ Fire Country, where he is both star and executive producer. This is a show that currently has good ratings and has a chance to air after the upcoming AFC Championship Game. In other words, he is doing a great job as an actor.

Despite all of this, host Spencer Hudnut told us last week (read the interview here) that Thieriot still wants to appear in SEAL Team here and there. So why did the show kill him? The short answer is that Hudnut and the writers felt they had no other choice. Taking Clay off the show for an extended period of time, especially when it’s unknown whether he’ll ever return, wouldn’t fit the story they’re telling. The implication is that his stories don’t matter anymore now that he’s out of the field, and that couldn’t be further from the truth. This is the only move that justifies Clay’s absence and also serves as an important emotional driving force for the series going forward. Of course, you’ll see Jason, Ray, and Sonny struggle with losing their brother on the battlefield, especially since he’s just found his peace after losing part of his leg.

We know that the SEAL Team plans to honor Clay in every way possible. You’ll feel his absence throughout this weekend’s episode, and that could carry over into season 7 later on. (Alas, there’s no official word on that subject yet.)
